Yle journalist Maxim Fedorov has followed the case in Poltava and posted regular updates on his personal Facebook page. The posts are in Finnish.

  1. The appeal will be heard in Poltava on 13 November. Four appeals have been filed, and Roope’s lawyer explains the possible outcomes, from release to yet another retrial.

    Facebook
  2. The appeal panel has finally been formed after three judges asked to be excused. Meanwhile, Roope shared a cell with a man charged with the same crime over a crash that killed several people. His hearings were held on consecutive days, and after two weeks he was moved to house arrest or a travel ban.

    Facebook
  3. MPs Oras Tynkkynen and Aleksi Jäntti have visited Roope in prison, although visits had until then been denied to almost everyone, even his family. The case has also been raised with Ukraine’s leadership.

    Facebook
  4. Appeals have been filed against the four-year sentence. The widow seeks the maximum sentence and 15 million hryvnias in compensation. Despite everything, Roope still wants to help Ukraine once he is free.

    Facebook
  5. Video: Roope gives his final words in court with tears in his eyes, as his sentence is reduced from six years to four. His lawyers say public sympathy has turned to Roope because of how he has been treated.

  6. Another hearing with almost nothing on the agenda. The widow is on holiday abroad, and she will be notified that a holiday is not a valid reason to miss a hearing.

    Facebook
  7. “Roopen tarina on saanut parissa viikossa yli 800 000 lukukertaa.” In a couple of weeks, Roope’s story has been read more than 800,000 times.

    Facebook
  8. Fedorov describes the hearings: short sessions on small details, with weeks of waiting in between. Roope doesn’t want to be acquitted, since he has admitted guilt. He only wants fair treatment.
